Visionary + Integrator: We Need Each Other More Than We Realize
After nearly 20 years sitting in the second-in-command seat—and now leading as a Visionary for the last 8 years — I’ve come to a deep realization:
We don’t just complement each other.
We depend on each other.
The relationship between a Visionary and an Integrator is one of the most powerful dynamics in a business. When it's healthy and aligned, it becomes the engine that drives the business forward—with clarity, purpose, and real results.
Here’s what I’ve come to observe:
Visionaries are more EXTERNAL and the WHAT.
We’re the big-picture thinkers. We’re constantly imagining what the business could become, how we could grow, innovate, or impact the world in a bigger way.
And we’re also the face of the company—naturally drawn to connect with people, tell our story, and build relationships outside the business. Whether it’s on stages, in meetings, through partnerships, or simply dreaming up what’s next—we bring energy and possibility.
But here’s the key…
Integrators are more INTERNAL and the HOW and the WHEN.
They are the ones who take that big vision and ask:
-
How will we make this happen?
-
When will it get done?
They run the day-to-day, lead and develop the team, keep the machine operating smoothly, and solve the million little problems that come with building something great. They’re internal operators—the glue that holds it all together—often working behind the scenes to bring order, structure, and traction to the chaos.
And it’s because I’ve worn both hats that I can say this with confidence:
Putting on my Integrator hat:
Visionaries, your team needs you to be the face.
Your Integrator needs you to build relationships, cast the vision, and be out in the world sharing your passion and purpose. That’s not optional—that’s your job.
Putting on my Visionary hat:
Integrators, we need you leading from the inside.
You are the anchor. You make the vision executable. You bring the clarity and confidence the team craves. And you allow us to focus on what’s next, knowing the now is in capable hands.
This partnership is not about hierarchy. It’s not about who’s more important or who gets more attention.
It’s about mutual respect.
It’s about staying in your zone of genius.
It’s about knowing that we each have a role to play—and when we both show up fully, we create something far greater than we could alone.
Let’s stop pretending we have to do it all.
Let’s honor what each role brings to the table—and keep building businesses where both Visionary energy and Integrator brilliance can thrive.
HOW TO APPLY THIS INSIGHT
-
Define the Roles Clearly.
Make sure both the Visionary and Integrator have clarity on what they’re responsible for—especially when it comes to external vs. internal focus. -
Communicate Often and Honestly.
The best Visionary/Integrator duos are in constant communication. Share frustrations early, celebrate wins often, and stay aligned on the priorities. -
Stay in Your Lane—and Champion Theirs.
Celebrate your counterpart’s strengths. Don’t try to be everything. The business needs you both fully in your role. -
Check Your Ego.
Neither role is more important. The business only works when both leaders are committed to collaboration over control.
CALL TO ACTION:
If you’re a Visionary or Integrator reading this—what’s one thing you’ve learned about working with your counterpart? How do you support each other in the work only you can do?
Let’s keep learning from one another. Together, we rise.
