Let Your Freak Flag Fly: Why Owning Your Uniqueness Is Your Superpower

Published on May 28, 2025

We’ve all heard the phrase, “Let your freak flag fly.” Gino Wickman repeats it like a mantra, encouraging leaders, entrepreneurs, and visionaries to stop hiding, stop conforming, and let their true selves show. And while it sounds fun and fearless, the truth is - flying your flag can be terrifying. Why? Because it means being vulnerable. It means risking judgment, rejection, or even envy.

But here's the thing: your freak flag is what makes you magnetic.

The Fear of Standing Out
We spend so much time trying to "fit in"—even in leadership. We tone down our ideas, mimic what others are doing, and second-guess what sets us apart. Why? Because standing out feels dangerous. It's more comfortable to blend in, even if it means dimming our brilliance.

Brené Brown says it best:
"When we lose our tolerance for vulnerability, joy becomes foreboding."
And when we’re afraid of what others might think, especially those who judge or feel jealous, we stop showing up fully.

Let’s Talk About Jealousy
Brené also reminds us that jealousy is a mirror, not a weapon. When someone envies you, it usually means you’re doing something they wish they could. Instead of shrinking, ask yourself: What is my boldness awakening in them? And more importantly: What am I being invited to embrace more fully in myself?

What It Means to Fly Your Freak Flag
Flying your flag doesn’t mean being loud or outrageous (unless that’s your thing). It means:

  • Owning your quirks.

  • Saying what you really think.

  • Doing the thing that only you can do—even if no one else gets it at first.

It’s about leading with authenticity, not approval. About letting people see the real you, even when it's messy, passionate, weird, or wildly different from the norm.

A Special Note to My Fellow Female Leaders:
You’ve spent enough time trying to be palatable. Professional. Perfect. What if the thing that makes you feel like too much is exactly what your team, your clients, your community needs most?

HOW TO: Let Your Freak Flag Fly Without Apology

  1. Name your flag. What’s your unique brilliance? What do you do that’s different—and proud of it?

  2. Notice when you hide. What moments make you shrink or second-guess yourself? Those are clues.

  3. Reframe envy. If someone seems threatened by your authenticity, it says more about their limits than yours. Keep going.

  4. Find your people. Seek the ones who cheer when you shine. That’s your tribe.

  5. Celebrate it publicly. Post it. Say it out loud. Live it. Not for attention—for alignment.

Final Thought:
Letting your freak flag fly is not about ego—it’s about freedom. It’s how you give permission for others to do the same. So wave it high, leader. The world needs what only you can bring.

Have you been dimming your light? What’s one way you’re going to let your freak flag fly this week? I’d love to hear it—reply or comment with your boldest move yet.
