The Emotions Wheel in Business: A Game-Changer for Leaders Who Want to Respond, Not React

Published on June 23, 2025

In business, emotions are often the undercurrent shaping decisions, dynamics, and direction. And yet, we rarely pause to name them. We say we’re “frustrated” or “angry,” but what do those really mean?

That’s where the Emotions Wheel comes in, a deceptively simple yet powerful tool that helps leaders identify the root emotion, not just the reaction on the surface.

I personally use the Emotions Wheel to go one level deeper. If I feel angry, I ask myself, “Why?” More often than not, I discover that I’m not actually mad...I feel humiliated, rejected, or disrespected. And when I can name that root emotion, I can assign a resolution task to it. That’s the real magic.

When we lead teams, run businesses, or sit at the executive table, emotional intelligence isn't a luxury, it's a leadership skill. Using the Emotions Wheel helps us move from confusion to clarity, from reaction to resolution. And it helps us teach our teams to do the same.

HOW TO: Use the Emotions Wheel in a Business Setting

1. Start with the surface emotion.

Ask yourself: What am I feeling right now? Name the broad emotion—anger, sadness, fear, joy.

2. Use the wheel to dig deeper. What is the root of this feeling? For example:

  • Anger might reveal humiliation

  • Frustration might reveal powerlessness

  • Fear might reveal insecurity

3. Assign a resolution task. Once the root is named, ask:

  • What do I need to do to resolve this feeling?

  • What conversation needs to happen?

  • What boundary needs to be set?

  • What support do I need?

4. Bring the Emotions Wheel into your leadership style.

  • Use it in 1:1s with your team to help them name their own experiences.

  • Keep it visible in your office or digital workspace.

  • Make it part of your check-in routine before meetings, decisions, or conflict resolution.

Call to Action

Emotional intelligence isn’t just about “being in touch with your feelings”. It’s about using them to lead better, communicate clearer, and make more aligned decisions.

If you’re feeling a certain way in business... pause. Pull out the Emotions Wheel. Go deeper.

Because when we can name it, we can tame it.
When we understand it, we can resolve it.

Start today, what are you really feeling?
