7 Power Phrases for Integrators to Use When Their Visionary Has a New Idea

Published on June 23, 2025

If you're an Integrator, you've likely heard this line before: “I had an idea in the shower this morning…” And just like that, your Visionary/CEO has brought you a new possibility—sometimes brilliant, sometimes bananas, usually both.

Your job isn’t to say yes or no. Your job is to understand. To clarify. To ground the idea in reality. To help your Visionary feel seen and supported while keeping your business moving forward.

Here are 7 phrases every great Integrator keeps in their back pocket—and exactly when to use them to spark clarity and protect your team’s priorities.

1. “Can you tell me more about that?”

When to use it: Right after the idea is shared.
Start by being curious—not critical. This keeps your Visionary engaged while giving you the context needed to assess feasibility. Plus, it builds trust.

2. “What problem are we solving with this?”

When to use it: Once the general idea is out.
This helps filter the idea through the lens of purpose. If there’s no real problem being solved, you’ve already done your job.

3. “Where do you see this fitting into our VTO/Business Plan?”

When to use it: As the idea gains traction.
Use this to zoom out and evaluate how this idea fits with your long-term goals. If it doesn’t align with your Vision, Traction, or strategic priorities, you can pump the brakes respectfully.

4. “Is this a now, soon, or someday idea?”

When to use it: When the Visionary starts outlining next steps.
Not every idea needs immediate action. This phrase helps determine urgency and timing—without shutting down the creativity.

5. “What does success look like to you?”

When to use it: As you explore execution.
This draws out your Visionary’s expectations and helps you set clear, measurable goals. Bonus: It helps avoid “moving target” syndrome down the road.

6. “What’s the budget or investment you’re envisioning for this project?”

When to use it: Before resources get committed.
It’s easy for Visionaries to dream big and forget real-world constraints. This phrase brings the idea into reality and gives you a starting point for practical planning.

7. “How does this align with our current priorities?”

When to use it: When your gut says this feels like scope creep.
This gently prompts a reset. It invites your Visionary to weigh their new idea against what’s already in motion—without you being the “no” person.

HOW TO USE THESE PHRASES EFFECTIVELY:

  1. Practice neutral tone and open body language when asking. These aren’t confrontational questions—they’re clarifying tools.

  2. Use a notepad or shared doc to capture the conversation so you can follow up with clarity.

  3. Bring your team in when appropriate. If the idea passes the first test, add it to the Issues list for group vetting.

  4. Know your Visionary’s language. Some Visionaries like to talk through ideas without acting on them. Others speak in “half-built” plans. Learn their style and respond accordingly.
